Summer Time

Who made the world?

Who made the swan and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean -

the one who flung herself out of the grass.

The one who is eating sugar out of my hand,

who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down -

who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.

I don't know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me, what is it you plan to do

with your one wild and precious life?

- Mary Oliver

The Science of Mindfulness:

Harvard Unveils MRI Study Proving Meditation Literally Rebuilds The Brain’s Gray Matter In 8 Weeks

"Test subjects taking part in an 8-week program of mindfulness meditation showed results that astonished even the most experienced neuroscientists at Harvard University. The study was led by a Harvard-affiliated team of researchers based at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the team’s MRI scans documented for the very first time in medical history how meditation produced massive changes inside the brain’s gray matter. “Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day,” says study senior author Sara Lazar of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program and a Harvard Medical School instructor in psychology. “This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing.”

Trauma Education for Humanitarian and Emergency Responders

The HeartMath Institute has designed a FREE 1‑hour online mini-course that teaches critical HeartMath techniques to help responders build resilience, protect against burnout, and help themselves and others during these intensely challenging events.  Although designed for first responders, humanitarian workers and volunteers, this course is open to anyone.

HeartMath Institute is offering everyone in the public this FREE Trauma Response Education Course. With the apparent increase of natural and humanitarian disasters like wildfires, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes or mass shootings, the need for more heart is greater than ever.

Responding to each crisis or disaster are people on the front lines: 9‑11 dispatchers, firefighters, law enforcement and paramedics, along with hundreds of citizens who find themselves helping without any training at all. While this work can be incredibly gratifying, it also carries the risk of depletion, burnout and secondary traumatization.

This trauma education course is brought to you by the HeartMath Institute. Instructed by Dr. Jorina Elbers, MD, MSc and Director of the Resilient Heart Trauma Recovery Project at the HeartMath Institute, trained in Canada as a Pediatric Neurologist, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.

You will find the course at: www.trauma.heartmathelearning.org
